Spud Fest Events Calendar Announced
Officially, the 2011 Spud Fest opens on Thursday, June 23rd, but the fun begins on May 21st with the annual medallion hunt. Clues will be posted on the Spud Fest Website by 6:00pm each Friday night. Be sure to register your button and raffle ticket before the hunt begins in order to be eligible for the maximum prize of $250.00.
When the last weekend in June finally arrives, the 39th annual event will open with Teen Night on Thursday June 23rd. This year’s Teen Night, will feature the all-new “Spud Idol” talent contest for local K-12 students. Winners in each of two categories will be selected to win $50 and the opportunity to perform on the festival’s main stage on Saturday afternoon. Friday’s highlights begin at 5:00pm with the fire department water fight, and a pork dinner sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. Diamond Back performs live music beginning at 8:00pm, and heads will turn skyward for fireworks at dusk.
On Saturday morning the Spud Run Riders will rally at Tootsie’s Tavern, while the rest of us begin lining the streets for the annual 11:00am parade. Afterwards, the Knights of Columbus will reprise their pork dinner as Big Lake’s hopeful don their gowns for the Ambassador Coronation held at the High School theatre at 1:15pm. Afternoon events at the main stage include the annual Spud Games, and a variety of events yet to be announced. The evening’s festivities include the Spud Run BBQ and Motorcycle Show at the main fairgrounds, and live music beginning at 8:00pm when Outside Recess takes the stage.
Sober cabs will be available from 9:00pm to close on both Friday and Saturday nights.
The fun starts early on Sunday with the 8K Lakes Run, and Potato Pancake breakfast both beginning at 8:00am. You might also attend the multidenominational Community Church Service to be held in the main tent from 9:30am – 11:30am. Sunday’s main event at the festival stage is “Smity’s Amateur Fiddlers Contest” beginning at 12:30pm.

Parade entry form and payment should be received BEFORE June 4th, 2011.

Seatbelt Tickets Up 2000%
The Sherburne County Sheriff's Dept. reported 70 seatbelt citatations for the week ending May 31st, an increase of more than two-thousand percent from the previous weekly average for the year. This year's national campaign continues through June 5th, but the added protection your seatbelt provides does not!
